Polo served on ice

The focus has recently moved off the slopes over the last few days and down to the frozen lake. All this additional playground space is being put to excellent use – where only a few months ago we watched the sailing – we can now watch the Polo village being erected.

I love watching the white tents being erected, transforming the sparkling blue lake into a whole new dimension. Horses skittering across the frozen surface make quite a change from the sails!

According to the locals St. Moritz was one of the first venues in continental Europe to establish polo playing, dating back to 1899, and last year was the first time in 28 years that the weather was too warm for the lake to sufficiently freeze over and the St Moritz Polo was cancelled!

Thankfully this year the conditions are perfect and we are all looking forward to 24 January
