Just a couple of weeks ago, up on Mammoth Mountain in California, a 16 year old prodigy executed a spectacular first. Torin Yater-Wallace, who was performing at the US Grand Prix Right  Big Jump competition, took off backwards and completed a switch 1800 which involved 5 rotations.

As it turns out what he was taking part in is called ‘slopestyle’ – something which the FIS Freestyle World Cup have just held, up in our own ‘backyard, Corvatsch

Slopestyle is a young sport which is set to premier in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. And it is awesome! It combines the most athletic and visually spectacular elements of snowboarding and skiing – the freeskiers, kitted out with their own type of ski that turns up at both ends (so they can ski backwards as easily as forwards) used Corvatsch’s freestyle park with its kickers, rails and halfpipe to show off multiple tricks.

From where I was standing it seemed more Cirque du Soleil than skiing and really took my breath away – what will they think of next!
