The ying and the yang of it

Wood carvings are something which you see all over the place here – beautiful etchings which I had not realised, until recently, have strong symbolic meanings. This was explained to me at a wood carving session when I was shown two symbols in particular which you see on buildings through to pieces of furniture and dishes.

The one on the left is the male symbol and the other is the female symbol. Apparently both these symbols should appear together to create harmony and balance. However I have now seen park benches and entire walls of buildings sporting just one of the beautiful symbols…

Just look at the effect when they are combined! Beautiful!
